What UTM parameters do

UTM parameters are short tags added to the end of a link. When someone clicks it, your analytics tool reads the tags and records where the visit came from, so every campaign, platform and creative shows up as its own line in your reports.

Source and medium

Source says where the click came from, such as dv360 or newsletter. Medium says what kind of traffic it is, such as display, video or email. Together they decide which channel a visit is grouped under in analytics, so set them every time.

Campaign, term and content

Campaign names the initiative, for example spring_sale_2026. Use term and content to split audiences or creative versions you want to compare, such as banner_300x250 against banner_728x90.

Keep naming consistent

Analytics treats Display and display as two different values, so one typo splits your data. Lowercase every value, replace spaces with underscores and agree a short naming convention with everyone who builds links. The builder does the first two for you.

Measure what the clicks are worth with the CPC, CTR and CPA calculator, or ask AdGeeks to set up tracking across your DSP campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

What are UTM parameters?

Tags added to a link, such as utm_source and utm_medium, that tell your analytics tool where a visit came from.

Which UTM parameters are required?

Use at least utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. utm_term and utm_content are optional and help you compare audiences or creatives.

Are UTM parameters case-sensitive?

Yes. Display and display are recorded as different values, so lowercase everything to keep reports clean.

Do UTM tags affect SEO?

No. They only add tracking to links you share in ads, emails and social posts. Do not use them on internal links within your own site.

What source and medium should I use for DV360?

A common choice is utm_source=dv360 with utm_medium=display, video or ctv depending on the format. The key is to use the same values every time.
