About budget planning

Plan the mix
then test it

Start from the goal

A media plan is a budget split across channels. Awareness campaigns usually lean on video and CTV, where the ad gets full attention, while consideration and performance campaigns lean on display and native, which reach people while they browse and are easier to click.

Use real CPMs

The planner multiplies each channel’s budget by its CPM to show the impressions you can expect. The CPMs it starts with are examples, so replace them with quotes from your DSP or agency, or with the typical CPMs for your market from the CPM calculator.

  • Channel impressions = Channel budget ÷ CPM × 1,000
  • Blended CPM = Total budget ÷ Total impressions × 1,000

Watch the blended CPM

The blended CPM shows what 1,000 impressions cost across the whole plan. It is useful for comparing mixes, but the cheapest mix is rarely the best one: a plan heavy in low-cost display can reach many impressions and still miss the people your goal needs.

Test before you scale

Run the plan, check which channels deliver the results you care about, and move budget towards them. Plan reach with the reach planner, find the platform that fits with the DSP quiz, or ask AdGeeks to build the plan with you.

Frequently asked questions

How should I split a programmatic budget?

Start from the goal. Awareness plans usually put more into video and CTV; performance plans put more into display and native. Then adjust based on what your results show.

What is a blended CPM?

The average cost of 1,000 impressions across your whole plan: total budget divided by total impressions, times 1,000.

Are the CPMs in the planner real prices?

No. They are example values to start from. Replace them with quotes for your campaign or with the typical CPMs for your market in the CPM calculator.

Do I need to spend on every channel?

No. Set a channel to 0% if it does not fit your goal or creative. A focused plan often works better than a thin spread across every channel.

Can AdGeeks build the plan for me?

Yes. AdGeeks can plan and run the mix across DV360, Amazon DSP, Adform and other platforms, with a managed team or a self-serve seat.
