Programmatic Buying

Programmatic Guaranteed

Programmatic guaranteed (PG) is a direct deal where a buyer reserves a fixed volume of a publisher's inventory at a fixed price, delivered through a DSP.

What is programmatic guaranteed?

Programmatic guaranteed (PG) is a deal type where a buyer and publisher agree on a fixed number of impressions at a fixed price, and the buy is delivered through the buyer's DSP instead of an insertion order. The publisher reserves the inventory and the buyer commits to buying it. It combines the certainty of a direct buy with programmatic delivery.

PG is the most committed form of programmatic direct buying.

How programmatic guaranteed works

  1. Negotiate: buyer and publisher agree on volume, CPM, flight dates, formats and any targeting.

  2. Reserve: the publisher books the impressions in its ad server, just like a direct campaign.

  3. Create the deal: a deal ID is generated and targeted to the buyer's DSP account.

  4. Set up in the DSP: the buyer adds the deal to a line item, uploads creatives and gets them approved by the publisher in advance.

  5. Deliver: the publisher sends the reserved impressions as bid requests carrying the deal ID. The buyer is expected to bid on them at the agreed price, and delivery is tracked against the booked volume.

Because the buyer has committed, the DSP should not filter out large parts of the deal with extra targeting. Tight targeting on a PG line item is a common reason deals under-deliver.

Pricing is usually a fixed CPM for the whole flight, though some deals set different rates by format or placement.

Why programmatic guaranteed matters

  • Guaranteed access: you secure premium placements, such as homepage takeovers, sponsorships or connected TV inventory, that rarely reach the open auction.

  • Everything in one place: reporting, budgets and frequency capping sit in the DSP alongside your other buys, instead of in a separate publisher report.

  • Less manual work: no separate creative trafficking and invoicing for each publisher.

  • Clear planning: fixed volume and price make it easy to forecast reach and cost.

The tradeoff is flexibility. You commit to volume up front, so PG suits campaigns with fixed dates and clear goals, such as product launches, seasonal moments or sponsorships. If you want to test or shift budget quickly, a non-guaranteed deal is usually a better fit. It is also worth agreeing up front what happens if delivery falls short, such as a make-good or a flight extension.

Programmatic guaranteed vs preferred deal

Both use a fixed price and a single buyer. The difference is commitment. In programmatic guaranteed, the volume is reserved and the buyer agrees to buy it. In a preferred deal, the buyer gets first look at the fixed price but can pass on any impression, and nothing is guaranteed. A private marketplace goes one step further from PG, with several buyers bidding in an invite-only auction.
