What is programmatic direct?
Programmatic direct is the automated purchase of ad inventory straight from a publisher, at a price and terms agreed in advance, instead of through an open auction. The buyer and seller agree on a deal, the publisher sets it up in its SSP or ad server, and the buyer runs it from a DSP using a deal ID.
It combines the relationship and control of a traditional direct buy with the targeting, delivery and reporting of programmatic advertising.
Types of programmatic direct deals
Programmatic direct covers two main deal types, with private marketplaces sitting right next to them:
Programmatic guaranteed: a fixed price and a reserved volume of impressions. The publisher commits to deliver, and the buyer commits to buy.
Preferred deal: a fixed price with no guaranteed volume. The buyer gets a first look at the inventory before it goes to auction and can buy or pass on each impression.
Private marketplace (PMP): an invitation-only auction among selected buyers, usually with a floor price. Some people include PMPs in programmatic direct; others treat them as a separate, auction-based category.
In every case, the deal ID in the bid request tells the DSP which agreement applies, so the right price and priority are used.
A typical setup runs like this: the buyer and publisher agree on inventory, price, dates and volume; the publisher creates the deal in its ad server or SSP and shares the deal ID; the buyer adds the deal in the DSP and attaches it to a line item; then the deal delivers and both sides track spend and impressions against the agreement.
Why programmatic direct matters
Premium access: some of the best inventory, such as homepage takeovers, high-profile video and CTV, is only available through deals.
Predictable pricing and delivery: especially with guaranteed deals, which suit launches and seasonal moments.
Transparency: you know which publisher and placements you are buying.
Efficiency: less insertion order paperwork and manual trafficking, with frequency and audience controls handled in the DSP.
The trade-off is flexibility. Guaranteed deals lock in budget, and pricing is usually higher than in the open auction.
Programmatic direct vs open auction
In the open auction, any approved buyer can bid on available impressions in real time, and prices are set impression by impression. It offers scale and low entry prices but less control over where ads appear. Programmatic direct replaces the open competition with an agreement between one buyer and one seller. Most advertisers use both: open auction for scale and efficiency, direct deals for premium placements and guaranteed presence. Because deal delivery depends heavily on the seller, watch it closely in the first days of a flight.
