What is supply path optimization (SPO)?
Supply path optimization (SPO) is the process buyers use to pick the best routes to the inventory they want. The same impression can often be bought through several SSPs and exchanges, each taking a fee. SPO analyzes those paths and concentrates spend on the ones that are cheapest, most transparent and most reliable, while cutting duplicates and unauthorized resellers.
How supply path optimization works
A supply path is the chain of companies between the publisher and the buyer's DSP. With header bidding, one publisher may send the same impression to many SSPs, and some of those resell it to others. A DSP can receive the same opportunity many times.
SPO usually involves five steps:
Mapping paths: using ads.txt, app-ads.txt, sellers.json and the SupplyChain object to see who is selling each impression and how many hops it took.
Removing unauthorized sellers: blocking paths where the seller is not listed as authorized by the publisher.
Comparing cost and quality: reviewing fees, win rates, viewability, invalid traffic and performance by SSP and exchange.
Consolidating: preferring direct paths, where the SSP has a direct relationship with the publisher, and dropping redundant reseller routes.
Using deals: moving key inventory into PMPs or curated deals through the preferred path.
DSPs also run SPO internally, for example by filtering duplicate bid requests, and many publishers run a similar review on the sell side. SPO is not a one-time cleanup: publishers change partners, new resellers appear and fees shift, so paths need regular review. Large buyers sometimes agree direct terms with a few preferred SSPs, but smaller buyers can apply the basics through DSP settings and inclusion lists.
Why SPO matters
Every intermediary takes a cut, so the more hops a path has, the less of the budget reaches the publisher. Long resale chains also make fraud easier to hide. SPO helps advertisers:
Get more working media for the same budget by cutting redundant fees.
Reduce exposure to ad fraud and domain spoofing by buying through authorized, direct paths.
Avoid bidding against themselves when the same impression arrives through several SSPs in a first-price auction.
Get cleaner reporting, since fewer hops mean clearer data on where ads ran.
Overdoing it has a cost. Cutting too many paths can reduce reach or remove access to some publishers. The goal is the best path to each publisher, not the fewest SSPs possible.
SPO vs ad verification
The two work together but solve different problems. Ad verification checks individual impressions for fraud, viewability and brand safety after or during delivery. SPO works one level up, deciding which sellers and routes you buy through at all. Good SPO reduces how much bad inventory verification has to catch in the first place.
Supply path optimization with AdGeeks
AdGeeks traders apply SPO principles when buying on DV360 and Adform. We review exchange and placement reports, favor authorized and direct paths, move priority publishers into deals, and remove sources that add cost without adding reach or quality. The aim is for more of your budget to reach the publishers you actually want.
