What is digital out-of-home (DOOH)?
Digital out-of-home (DOOH) is advertising displayed on digital screens in public spaces, such as roadside billboards, bus shelters, train stations, airports, malls, gyms and office elevators. Unlike printed billboards, DOOH screens rotate several ads, can change creative by time of day, and can be bought programmatically through DSPs alongside online media.
DOOH reaches people outside the home, often at moments when they are commuting, shopping or traveling, and it is one of the few channels that is hard to skip or block.
How DOOH works
A DOOH network is made up of screens owned by media owners. Each screen runs a loop of ads, and each slot in that loop is an ad play. Buyers can book screens directly or buy them through programmatic advertising channels.
Programmatic DOOH: screens are offered through SSPs, and DSPs bid on ad plays using rules such as location, venue type, time of day and budget.
Impression multipliers: one ad play on a public screen is seen by many people, so DOOH sellers often report impressions as the estimated audience per play, based on footfall or traffic data, rather than one impression per play.
Triggers: creatives can switch based on conditions such as weather, time, live scores or local events, if the screen network supports it.
Location targeting: buyers pick screens near stores, in specific cities or in venue types that match the audience.
Why DOOH matters
Broad, local reach: a few well-placed screens can reach large numbers of people in a defined area.
Brand-safe by design: ads run on screens in physical places, not next to user-generated content.
Flexible buying: programmatic DOOH lets you start, pause and adjust campaigns in days instead of booking months ahead.
Works with mobile: DOOH pairs well with geofencing, retargeting mobile devices seen near screens, where privacy rules and data partners allow it.
Measurement is the main challenge. You cannot track a click on a billboard, so DOOH relies on audience estimates, brand lift studies, footfall studies or regional sales comparisons to show impact.
DOOH vs traditional OOH
Traditional out-of-home uses static posters and printed billboards. Space is booked for weeks, the creative stays the same and changes require printing and installation. DOOH uses screens, so several advertisers share a location in rotation, creatives can change instantly, and inventory can be bought programmatically with targeting rules. Traditional OOH can offer longer exclusive presence on a single site; DOOH offers flexibility and data-driven buying. Many plans combine DOOH with connected TV to reach the same audience at home and on the move.
