What is brand safety?
Brand safety is the practice of keeping ads from appearing next to content that could harm an advertiser's reputation, such as hate speech, violence, adult material, illegal activity or misinformation. It combines pre-bid filters, exclusion lists, verification vendors and post-campaign reporting so programmatic buying stays efficient without putting the brand in the wrong place.
Because programmatic campaigns can reach thousands of sites and apps, nobody reviews every placement by hand. Brand safety tools do that screening at scale, and the settings you choose decide how much inventory you keep and how much you give up.
How brand safety works
Most brand safety setups combine several layers:
Content category exclusions: DSPs let you exclude sensitive categories such as violence, adult content or tragedy before you bid.
Pre-bid verification: third-party vendors such as Integral Ad Science and DoubleVerify score pages and apps, and the DSP skips impressions that fall below your settings.
Inclusion and exclusion lists: allowlists limit buying to approved domains and apps, while blocklists remove known problem sites.
Keyword and contextual controls: page-level analysis avoids articles about specific topics, even on otherwise trusted sites.
Supply quality checks: buying only through authorized sellers listed in ads.txt and reputable exchanges cuts out spoofed or low-quality inventory.
Post-bid reporting: verification tags show where ads actually ran so you can adjust lists during the flight.
Why brand safety matters
Reputation: a single screenshot of an ad next to extreme content can spread fast and hurt trust.
Wasted spend: unsafe environments often overlap with low-quality inventory, made-for-advertising sites and ad fraud.
Performance: ads in credible environments tend to get more attention and better engagement than those on cluttered or questionable pages.
Stakeholder trust: clear brand safety settings and placement reports make it easier to answer questions from leadership or clients about where ads ran.
Brand safety vs brand suitability
Brand safety is the baseline: content that almost no advertiser wants to appear next to. Brand suitability is brand-specific: content that is fine in general but may not fit your message. A news article about a plane crash is safe for most brands, but not suitable for an airline. A cocktail recipe page suits a spirits brand but not a children's product.
The common mistake is setting brand safety filters too tight. Blocking all news or wide keyword lists can remove large amounts of quality inventory, push up CPMs and limit reach. Good setups block the clear risks, then tune suitability to the brand. Pairing these controls with viewability targets helps make sure the impressions you keep are also seen.
