Addressable TV

Addressable TV is television advertising that serves different ads to different households watching the same content, based on household-level audience data.

What is addressable TV?

Addressable TV is a form of TV advertising that lets advertisers show different ads to different households watching the same program at the same time. Instead of buying a spot that every viewer sees, the advertiser targets households that match a defined audience, such as new movers or pet owners, using data tied to the TV device or account.

The term started with cable and satellite set-top boxes. Today it usually also covers connected TV and smart TV inventory, where ads are served one stream at a time.

How addressable TV works

  1. Audience definition: the advertiser picks a target, built from first-party customer data, third-party data or the TV provider's own subscriber data.

  2. Matching: that audience is matched to households, typically through a privacy-safe process using hashed identifiers or a data clean room.

  3. Dynamic ad insertion: when an ad break starts, the set-top box, smart TV or streaming app swaps in the ad assigned to that household instead of the standard spot.

  4. Measurement: delivery is reported at household level and can be tied to outcomes like site visits or store sales through matched data.

On linear TV, addressable buys are usually sold by cable operators, satellite providers or broadcasters with their own platforms. On streaming, buying is mostly programmatic through a DSP, often via private deals with publishers.

Why addressable TV matters

Traditional TV is bought on broad demographics like adults 25 to 54, so a lot of spend reaches people who will never buy. Addressable TV keeps the big screen and the lean-back viewing experience but cuts waste by focusing on households that fit.

  • Less waste: smaller brands can use TV without paying for national reach they do not need.

  • Frequency control: household-level delivery makes frequency capping possible across sessions and apps.

  • Better measurement: exposure data can be linked to outcomes, which is hard with classic TV ratings.

  • Creative variation: different households can see different messages, offers or languages.

The tradeoff is cost. Addressable impressions usually carry a higher CPM than broad TV buys, so the targeting has to justify the premium.

Addressable TV vs connected TV

The two overlap but are not the same. Connected TV describes the device and delivery: content streamed over the internet to a TV screen. Addressable TV describes the targeting: serving a specific ad to a specific household. Most CTV ads can be addressable, but addressable TV also includes linear cable and satellite ads delivered through set-top boxes. A related term, OTT, refers to streaming content delivery on any screen.
